A Message from the Director

“Our hope for this course is that you will gain a new understanding- a broadened understanding- of Scripture and what God says about His heart for the poor. Through the true stories of poor families, I hope you will gain a better understanding of what they're going through and the challenges they face.  I also hope you'll see how your gifts and abilities can serve a poor family and how your church can be involved beyond just giving financially.” -Ted Gandy.

Compassion by Command was just what I needed to train the staff, volunteers, and new recruits who work in my Home Missions Department. It has been implemented in our church as a tool to teach our congregation on God’s heart for the poor in several diferent types of groups both small (15 people) and large (100). It has been a great motivator and encourager to everyone. I have been personally moved towards compassion for the poor in even greater ways then ever before.

Treg McCoy, Director of Home Missions for Times Square Church, New York

The Compassion by Command study has made an impact in my dealings with people in need. I always think about Teresa and Hillary from the movie God Bless the Child.

Carmel Hicks, Love INC, California

Growing up in New York, it’s easy to become jaded when you’re surrounded by poverty and panhandlers. Although I’ve known about the poor and have even volunteered at soup kitchens, Compassion by Command helped me learn HOW to show compassion. Even giving a simple quarter to someone who asks is a way of helping, whether I know where the money is going or not.

Alan Chan, Attorney, New York

The movie, God Bless the Child, was amazing! The Compassion by Command study taught me that all the poor are looking for is a friend. They are people just like us, and we shouldn’t be afraid of them. Compassion by Command helped to prepare me and the other youth group members for our outreach to the poor in NYC. (Went to a Homeless Coffee Shelter in Manhattan.) Without Compassion by Command, I may have withdrawn myself at the shelter and sat in the corner. But instead, me and two other girls talked with a homeless man for half an hour about the Lord. Compassion by Command was an eye-opener for us.

Danielle Blumquist, 17-year-old, New Jersey

My most favorite part of Compassion by Command was the exposure to Scriptures on God’s heart for the poor that I had never known about.

Stephanie, College Student, Summer In The City-New York (Here’s Life Inner City Project.)

I’ve always had a heart for the poor, but going through Compassion by Command heightened my awareness about the importance of dignity in a poor person’s life. Through the study, I understood better the idea of helping the poor help themselves.
